WWE TLC: What to Keep an Eye on During Sunday’s Event

Sunday, December 16, 2018
Sunday night marks the final WWE pay-per-view event of 2018 and it is expected to be a great one. There are a few storylines that have gauged the interest of fans and it looks like this event will set the stage for the road to WrestleMania. Some matches to make note of are the finals of the WWE’s Mixed-Match Challenge will determine who’ll be the 30th entry in both the men and women’s Royal Rumble matches, Dean Ambrose will challenge former Shield teammate Seth Rollins for the WWE Intercontinental championship, Braun Strowman will take on Baron Corbin to become number-1 contender for Brock Lesnar’s WWE Universal championship, while Corbin looks to become the permanent Raw General Manager, and “the new” Daniel Bryan will look to retain his WWE championship against the former champion AJ Styles.
There will be plenty of things for fans to keep an eye on during Sunday’s event, here a are few:
Shane McMahon and The Miz Storyline
It seems odd that The Miz is not scheduled to compete during this event considering he’s been arguably one of the most entertaining stars in WWE. No matter what he’s involved in whether it’s a tag-team match against Chip and Chad or MizTV segments with Daniel Bryan, he has continuously been able to make the most out of them.
On this past week’s episode of Smackdown, The Miz was backstage with Shane McMahon following another failed attempt to impress the Smackdown Commissioner and offered his hand, but Shane left him hanging and left, which may’ve signaled that The Miz is slowly becoming a babyface and Shane a heel.
I don’t think The Miz will be off this event entirely because he’s involved in a storyline with Shane and if you listened to Monday’s ‘No Holds Barred’ wrestling show, BarnBurner founder Joseph Peisich mentioned that sources have indicated that Miz and Shane will be facing off at WrestleMania for the ‘Best in the World’ trophy that he won at Crown Jewel. WWE could use this PPV to add to the double-turn and get the WWE universe firmly behind The Miz as the newest babyface on Smackdown.
TLC Match for Smackdown Women’s championship: Becky Lynch (c) vs Asuka vs Charlotte Flair
In the past few months, Becky Lynch has become the most popular star both male and female on WWE’s roster. The fans have really gotten behind her since she had a change of attitude and won the Smackdown Women’s championship. This triple-threat match will be the first-ever women’s TLC match in WWE and they have three of their best in-ring workers taking part, so it should be a great match and possibly main-event the show.
There is plenty of speculation on who will walk out of TLC with the Women’s championship. Currently, the plan seems to be Ronda Rousey vs Becky Lynch at WrestleMania so it’ll be interesting to see if Becky drops the title in this match.
If Becky doesn’t walk out of TLC with the Smackdown Women’s championship, it could mean that Asuka finally captures the championship after failing to do so at WrestleMania where she was defeated by Charlotte Flair. Asuka walking out of TLC with the title would be a nice surprise because she has sort been lost in the shuffle on Smackdown and hasn’t been a built up as a threat to the champion since WrestleMania. On Smackdown, the show ended with her getting the upper-hand over Becky and Charlotte so that may signify that WWE are teasing an Asuka victory at TLC.
Rey Mysterio vs Randy Orton in Chairs Match
The match between these two future Hall of Famers is another one to keep an eye on in terms of plans going forward. On the ‘No Holds Barred’ wrestling show, Joseph Peisich also mentioned that WWE are planning on setting up Randy Orton vs AJ Styles at WrestleMania, which would be a big match for both men and could have match of the night written all over it.
In addition, I mentioned that sources have indicated to me that WWE also have big plans involving Rey Mysterio and the United-States championship at WrestleMania. Depending on who’s champion by then, fans could see Rey Mysterio vs Shinsuke Nakamura, Rey Mysterio vs Samoa Joe, or Rey Mysterio vs Andrade Cien Almas in what could be a passing of the torch from a Mexican star of the past to a Mexican star of the future.
With that said, this match will be interesting because WWE will likely want both to look as strong as possible heading into the new year.
