After a successful NXT TakeOver: WarGames event last night, WWE turn their attention to Survivor Series on the third of four nights of events in Chicago, Illinois. For the first time ever, fans will get to see Raw vs SmackDown vs NXT in the battle for brand supremacy. The traditional Survivor Series tag team matches will take place as well as three world championship matches that each have interesting storylines leading into the event.
With Survivor Series being one of WWE’s big four events, fans will surely be in for a few surprises throughout the night. Over the years, some of the most popular superstars of all-time have debuted at the event including: The Undertaker, The Rock, Kurt Angle, Sting, and The Shield (Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns).
Here are some of the matches that could feature some surprises at tonight’s event:
Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch vs Smackdown Women’s Champion Bayley vs NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler
One night after coming up short in the first-ever Women’s WarGames match, NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler will look to prove that she is the top women’s champion on WWE’s roster.
Baszler, a member of MMA’s 4 Horsewomen, will be competing against Bayley and Becky, both members of WWE’s four horsewomen. This is interesting because other than social media, there has yet to be any interaction between the 4 Horsewomen of WWE and MMA on WWE’s main roster programming and tonight’s match could be very telling of what’s to come in 2020 as the company look to begin their buildup for WrestleMania.
It’ll be interesting to see if Ronda Rousey makes her return to cost Becky and Bayley the match and help her friend get the victory, which would set the stage for a one-on-one match between Becky and Ronda at either the Royal Rumble or WrestleMania.
Team Raw (Seth Rollins, Ricochet, Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, and Randy Orton) vs Team SmackDown (Roman Reigns, Shorty G, Mustapha Ali, Braun Strowman, and King Corbin) vs Team NXT (Members TBA)
This match will be interesting not because the two former members of The Shield are captaining their respective brand, but it's because Team NXT have yet to announce who will be representing their brand. Team Raw may be questioning the allegiance of Kevin Owens, who made a surprise appearance at last night’s TakeOver event as the fourth member of Team Ciampa in the WarGames match. There could be some swerve leading into the match the sees Owens abandon Raw and join Team NXT.
Another possibility in this match would be the return of The Velveteen Dream to represent NXT, which would likely make for a great Survivor Series moment as he is not only one of the most popular characters in NXT, but he is also one of the most popular character in all of WWE.
In addition, there is plenty of speculation that Seth Rollins will turn heel and embrace the boos he’s received the past few months. Rollins turning heel would be the perfect way to refresh his character and get some interest in his next storylines and feuds.
No Holds Barred Match for the WWE Championship: Brock Lesnar (C) vs Rey Mysterio
Who would’ve thought that in 2019, a WWE Championship match between Brock Lesnar and Rey Mysterio would be one of the most intriguing storylines heading into a PPV?
The feud all started when Lesnar interrupted Mysterio’s in-ring segment as he was about to address the crowd ahead of his Universal Championship match with Seth Rollins later that night. Lesnar attacked Mysterio and then turned his attention to his son Dominik, who was in the crowd, and beat him down as well.
The attack led to the WWE debut of former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez, who was revealed as being Dominik’s godfather, who then got retribution on Lesnar to close the debut episode of Smackdown on FOX. Lesnar would get revenge at Crown Jewel, when he defeated Velasquez to retain his title however, Mysterio attacked Lesnar after the match, which angered the beast incarnate even more to the point where he quit SmackDown, just so he can rejoin Raw and be on the same show as Mysterio.
On this past week’s Raw, the match was officially changed to a No Holds Barred match, which resulted in Mysterio cutting a promo of how the stipulation works best for him.
The stipulation adds another element to this match and makes the idea of Rey Mysterio winning the WWE Championship a lot more realistic. Fans could also be in for some surprises in this match; Cain Velasquez and Dominik could get involved in order to assist Mysterio at some point or this match could potentially be the sight of another memorable Survivor Series debut or return.
