It’s that time of year once again, the Royal Rumble, an event that features two Royal Rumble matches that provide 30 male and 30 female superstars an opportunity to earn a world title match at WrestleMania. The event is a fan-favourite and officially kicks-off the road to WrestleMania.

Each year, the Royal Rumble has provided fans with plenty of surprises and memorable moments that have either jumpstarted or established the careers of many WWE superstars and legends. Some past moments include Shawn Michaels being the first entrant and winning the 1995 Royal Rumble, Triple H winning the 2002 Royal Rumble after being out of action for 8-months, Rey Mysterio winning the 2006 Royal Rumble in memory of his friend, Eddie Guerrero, and of course Becky Lynch winning last year’s Royal Rumble match to set up the first-ever women’s WrestleMania main event with Ronda Rousey.

There are many interesting possibilities for this year, especially for the men’s rumble match; WWE Champion Brock Lesnar will be the first entrant and it will be exciting see if he goes on to win the entire match or if any superstar can eliminate him as a way to set up a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania.

On BarnBurner’s Royal Rumble preview, which will be uploaded later today, I mentioned to BarnBurner CEO Joe Peisich and Steve Carney of WDAE Radio that I believe Drew McIntyre will win the men’s rumble match and challenge Lesnar for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania. McIntyre has been transitioning to more of a babyface role in recent weeks and a main event match with Lesnar would offer fans something different at WrestleMania.

The women’s rumble match is just as intriguing. Although the build-up hasn’t been as strong, the minimal number of women confirmed make the match a lot more unpredictable because it could feature many surprise entrants from women currently competing on NXT and NXT UK as well as past legends. Two notable superstars that fans should keep in mind are fellow members of MMA’s Four Horsewomen, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler.

Rousey has been rumored for months however if she doesn’t up being an entrant, Baszler would be the ideal choice to enter the matchup. Baszler was not included in the NXT World’s Collide event last night, which could indicate that she is scheduled to not only be a surprise entrant, but maybe even win the match.

Who will win their respective rumble match and earn a world title match at WrestleMania? Who will be a surprise entrant? Who will have the most eliminations? We will find all that out tonight.
