Following the main event of NJPW’s Dontaku, where NJPW World Champion Kazuchika Okada successfully retained his title against Sanada after a grueling 38-minute match, a video played showing Chris Jericho issuing a challenge to Okada for the NJPW World Championship at the company’s next event, Dominion on June 9th.

This was a surprise because Jericho signed a lucrative deal with All Elite Wrestling and is scheduled to headline their first event, Double or Nothing against Kenny Omega on May 25th.

Jericho wrestling at Dominion could open the door for a relationship between the two companies and see both collaborate in the future in that if both companies get the exposure and attention they desire, a co-promoted event shouldn’t be ruled out considering AEW wants to be an alternative to WWE.

This will be Jericho’s first match in NJPW since Wrestle Kingdom 13, where he lost his Intercontinental Championship to Tetsuya Naito, who he had defeated to become champion at Dominion 2018.

Jericho has done an excellent job in reinventing his character every time he steps into the ring; last year he arrived in NJPW as the Alpha, then changed his look to portray a dark version, and now in his challenge to Okada, is referring to himself as the painmaker.

It’ll be interesting to see if Jericho walks out of Dominion with a championship for the second year in a row and whether there will be more AEW stars added to the event.
