WWE’s NXT brand will once again kick-off the company’s biggest weekend of the year with their TakeOver event. NXT TakeOver events have been known to feature some of the best matches many believe even surpass those seen on the main roster PPVs in terms of quality and they're able to showcase some of the company’s future stars to a larger audience.
This TakeOver will provide plenty of action for fans; The War Raiders will put their NXT Tag Team Championships on the line against Aleister Black and Ricochet, who will also be competing for the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 35, Pette Dunne will look to continue his impressive WWE United Kingdom Championship reign when he takes on WALTER, Velveteen Dream defends his NXT North American Championship against the ‘King of the Bros’ Matt Riddle, NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler will defend her title in a fatal-four-way match against Io Shirai, Bianca Belair, and Kairi Sane, and Johnny Gargano takes on the leader of the Undisputed Era, Adam Cole in a two-out-of-three falls match for the vacant NXT Championship.
There is a lot of excitement surrounding the event however the main event for the vacant NXT Championship looks like the more intriguing match on the card. Originally, then-NXT Champion Tomasso Ciampa was to defend against Johnny Gargano, but he was unfortunately removed from the card because he required neck surgery and will be out of action for a lengthy period of time. As a result, plans were changed and Adam Cole was inserted into the main event, making this a match that will determine the future of NXT and could have main roster implications.
Both Adam Cole and Johnny Gargano have been able to adapt to the in-ring styles and possess the ability to steal the show every time they step into the ring. In terms of main roster implications, WWE could go in different directions with these two stars. If Gargano loses, he could be a great fit for 205 Live because he has the popularity and in-ring quality that may lead to more Cruiserweight title matches being featured on the main PPV cards as opposed to being slotted on the pre-shows and he could be a suitable opponent for Buddy Murphy to feud with long-term.
If Adam Cole loses, WWE could decide to finally call-up the entire Undisputed Era to the main roster the night after WrestleMania, which would give Raw or Smackdown a dominant stable much like Evolution and The Shield were when they had their run as a unit. If WWE call-up the Undisputed Era, Gargano could have another NXT Championship reign and buy some more time for NXT to slowly build-up new stars while also keeping Gargano as the focal point of the show.
