York 9 FC and Valour FC played to a scoreless draw this afternoon, leaving the clubs in a tight race in the preliminary round robin of The Island Games tournament.
York 9 midfielder Chris Mannella was still out of the lineup but on the bright side, Michael Petrasso, who had subbed on in Tuesday’s draw with Pacific, was back in the starting-XI for the first time.
With Petrasso available to start, York 9 FC head coach Jimmy Brennan went with a 4-3-3 formation: Nathan Ingham starting in-goal; Morey Doner, Roger Thompson, Luca Gasparotto, and Diyaeddine Abzi on the backline; Joseph Di Chiara, Wataru Murofushi, and captain Manny Aparicio in the midfield; and Michael Petrasso, Ryan Telfer, and Alvaro Rivero as the attacking trio up top.
York 9 did a great job from a defensive aspect but were not able to gain momentum on the offensive end. It’s not like the team didn’t try, they had just been unlucky in terms of their shots being blocked or take a slight deflection.
Brennan mentioned that although the club did not get on the scoresheet today, he did not feel that it is a cause for concern:
“We’re getting into the right areas, it just comes with sharpness. It’s just that final ball because our runs were good – we’re hitting the near post, far post, we’re hitting the penalty spot with our runs.”
Unfortunately for York 9, Petrasso was subbed off in the 37th minute due to injury. During the post-match press conference, I asked Brennan if he received an update on whether the injury was serious or not. Brennan said he did not get an update, but the substitution was more of a precaution:
“It was disappointing because I thought Michael was just starting to get into a little rhythm there. He was getting into the game. He was causing them problems. He felt something and we took him off right away – didn’t want to risk it, make it worse.”
Jace Kotsopoulos, who was a late addition to York 9 FC’s roster, made his York 9 debut when he subbed on in the second half. Although he joined the roster prior to The Island Games tournament, you can tell that he could be an asset for the club off the bench as the tournament progresses.
Brennan spoke highly about Kotsopoulos’ offensive qualities and how he fits in with the club:
“Jace is a great little player. He’s got an eye for goal. And obviously, he joined the team a bit late so we had to get him up to match play and had to get him ready fitness-wise so that he could come on today – he’s got his minutes. But I’ve liked Jace you know, I think he’s a great little player and given the chance, he could score you goals. And that’s where we’re at right now…you know we’ve got some good attacking pieces and now it’s just getting them to get in their stride, get their goals, and fire on all cylinders.”
York 9 are back in action on Wednesday, when they take on defending champions Forge FC at 1pm EST.
