Richie Laryea’s 15th minute goal was all Toronto FC needed to defeat the Vancouver Whitecaps, to take the full 6 points from their week of matches at BMO Field. With the victory, Toronto extends their regular season unbeaten streak to 17 matches, which is an impressive feat for the club.
Toronto head coach Greg Vanney went with a 4-4-1-1 formation in his starting-XI: Quentin Westberg starting in-goal; Auro Jr., Omar Gonzalez, Chris Mavinga, and Richie Laryea on the backline; Jonathan Osorio, Liam Fraser, Pablo Piatti, and captain Michael Bradley in the midfield; Alejandro Pozuelo as a central forward and attacking midfielder; and Jozy Altidore as the lone striker.
It was not as dominant of a win as Tuesday’s match however, Toronto looked great and were able to keep the lead and majority of possession throughout the match to earn a second straight clean sheet.
Laryea scored in the 15th minute after receiving a cross pass from Alejandro Pozuelo and struck in the back of the net past Thomas Hasal. Pozuelo has had an excellent season thus far and looks to be building great chemistry with the midfielders through their link up play and finding openings for scoring opportunities.
During the post-match press conference, Vanney praised new addition Pablo Piatti for his work ethic and fitness since returning from injury:
“Pablo is extremely fit – he works hard. He was the first guy back because of the injury and quarantine to be able to work on the field…he and Michael (Bradley) both. And so, through the stretch he’s done a ton of work to get fit. I put him up there with one of our fittest guys.”
Toronto have a short break and are back in action next Friday, when they travel to Montreal to take on the Montreal Impact at Saputo Stadium.
