Marcus Haber’s goal in the 69th minute was all Cavalry FC needed to defeat York 9 FC and clinch top spot in the preliminary round of The Island Games tournament and will now advance to the second round.

After 6 matches in the Island Games tournament, York 9 had their squad at full strength for the first time after Brennan was forced to adjust his lineup due to the amount of injuries that occurred to players in the starting-XI.

York 9 FC head coach Jimmy Brennan went with a 4-3-2-1 formation: Nathan Ingham starting in-goal; Morey Doner, Roger Thompson, Luca Gasparotto, and Fugo Segawa on the backline; Joseph Di Chiara, Chris Mannella, and captain Manny Aparicio in the midfield; and Diyaeddine Abzi and Michael Petrasso as the wingers supporting the midfield and attack, and Ryan Telfer as the striker.

There was a delay early in the match after a strong slide tackle by Thompson caused a serious injury to Cavalry midfielder Oliver Minatel. The 28-year old Brazilian needed to be stretchered off and transported to a local hospital, so his season is over.

During his post-game media availability, Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. mentioned that Minatel’s injury was indeed serious and that he was in surgery.

Telfer and Petrasso both had their fair share of scoring opportunities but were unable to put the ball past Cavalry goalkeeper Marco Carducci. Telfer, who had been a constant goal scoring threat for opposing teams last season, has struggled to find his rhythm offensively and get on the scoresheet.

York 9 still have a chance to advance to the second round however, they will need to rely on other teams to get a result. York 9 will be keeping a close eye on tomorrow’s matches as the results will determine whether they get in with a top-4 finish or if their tournament is over.
