BASEBALL

In a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of the National League Division Series, the Atlanta Braves blamed center fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. for not hustling. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Acuña Jr. hit a high fly ball, but instead of running full force to land on second base, he held his bat while looking at the ball and casually strutted to first. Cardinals 7, Braves 6

In the other NLDS matchup, the Los Angeles Dodgers cruised to an easy first game win over the Washington Nationals. Dodgers 6, Nationals 0

FOOTBALL

In Thursday night football, the Seattle Seahawks faced tough competition against the Los Angeles Rams, but thanks to an inspired game by Seahawks' quarterback Russell Wilson, who went 17-23, 268 yards and 4 touchdowns, Seattle held on for a big win. Seahawks 30, Rams 29

OTHER

Sports Illustrated's management laid off 35-40% of the editorial staff.  Authentic Brands Group purchased Sports Illustrated for $110 million in May and leased its media operations to Seattle start-up Maven. Maven is expected to recruit freelancers and bloggers to replace salaried SI writers. Staffers of the iconic magazine claim the job losses are worse than expected and morale is low.
