UFC Fight Night 146: Dos Santos and Lewis Look to get back in Title Contention

UFC Fight Night 146 takes place Saturday night live on ESPN + and will be headlined by the heavyweight clash between former UFC heavyweight champion Junior ‘Cigano’ dos Santos and former title-challenger Derrick ‘The Black Beast’ Lewis. This is a significant fight for both because a win could put them back in the mix of title contenders at heavyweight especially since Francis Ngannou and Stipe Miocic will likely fight one another and current champion Daniel Cormier will be defending his title against Brock Lesnar.
Dos Santos is coming into this fight on a two-fight win streak that includes a unanimous decision win over former WSOF heavyweight champion Blagoy Ivanov and Tai Tuivasa. Depending on how soon Cormier and Lesnar fight, dos Santos could also put himself in a position to avenge his most recent loss with Stipe Miocic in a trilogy fight if he’s able to defeat Lewis. Dos Santos defeated Miocic by unanimous decision in 2014 and Miocic avenged that loss when he successfully defended his heavyweight championship by TKO at UFC 211 in 2017.
Although Lewis is coming into this fight off a loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 230, he still has a lot of momentum on his side. When Lewis challenged Cormier for the heavyweight championship, he had accepted the fight on less than one-month notice and was coming of a hard-fought bout with Alexander Volkov at UFC 229, where he won the fight by KO in the last ten seconds of the bout.
With a win, Lewis could set himself up for a rematch with Francis Ngannou, who he had defeated by unanimous decision at UFC 226. A rematch with Ngannou could be a bigger fight now because both have gained more popularity since their previous bout and are exciting fighters to watch.
Another fighter Lewis could target next is Miocic because a win over two former UFC heavyweight champions could secure a number one contender shot at whomever the champion is at that point.
It’ll be interesting to see how the main event plays out but if past fights are an indicator, this could very well end by knockout.
