Las Vegas, NV--- The UFC close out their 2019 PPV schedule tomorrow night with an event that will surely provide plenty of excitement for MMA fans. The event features a stacked card with plenty of notable names as well as three championship bouts that could change the landscape of the promotion in 2020.

After months of negotiations, UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman and challenger Colby Covington will finally settle the score in the main event with the title on the line. Both fighters come into this bout with identical 15-1 MMA records and their fighting styles are similar, which should make for an intriguing fight.

The challenger, Covington, has been quite the controversial character during his rise up the ranks in the welterweight division and the champion is looking to make him pay for it. Whether it’s through social media or cutting pro wrestling style promos while wearing a MAGA hat and holding the Donald Trump Jr. book “Triggered.”

While appearing on a podcast, Covington admitted that he put on a character because the UFC had planned on cutting him from the promotion in the past, regardless if he won or lost because they felt he wasn’t entertaining enough. Covington then took matters into his own hands and used his post-fight interview to bash the Brazilian crowd in attendance, which then changed the promotion’s mind about cutting him from the roster.

This fight will be Usman’s first title defense and he’ll look to establish himself as one of the organization’s top pound-for-pound fighters with his performance. The former Ultimate Fighter winner put on an excellent display of his abilities when he captured the title from Tyron Woodley and look to replicate that by shutting down Covington.

Last month, I had the chance to interview MMA analyst Robin Black on Vibe 105.5FM in Toronto. Among the topics discussed were Covington being a controversial figure in the sport and whether putting on a pro wrestling type character would have a negative impact on his career. Robin mentioned that fans see through his act and it will only result in them only tuning in to see him lose as opposed to them tuning in because they care about him as a fighter and are interested to see what's he has planned outside the octagon:

“The only people that he’s affected are people in the media who talk about it – and that’s great we talk about it - and we don’t affect the audience because they just don’t care - he is not authentic, he’s inauthentic --- it’s act and we see right through it.”

The winner of the fight could have a quick turnaround as it is expected that Jorge Masvidal, who defeated Nate Diaz to win the BMF title at UFC 245, will be next in line for a title shot.
