Bellator capped off an eventful weekend of back-to-back events by crowning a new Bellator Batamweight Champion. Juan Archuleta defeated Patchy Mix via unanimous decision in the main event, to win the vacant championship and hand Mix the first loss of his MMA career.

It was a close back-and-forth fight that saw Mix take Archuleta down early and showcase his dangerous ground game; Mix stayed active with multiple submission attempts and looked determined to finish Archuleta.

Archuleta managed to get the fight back to the standup, which saw the momentum shift in his favour as he was able to land significant strikes and was successful with his combinations. Although Mix is not known for his striking, he held his own at times and connected with some combinations of his own.

Based on what had transpired in the fight, It was clear that a strong performance in the fifth round would determine the winner. Mix had been in control the first and second round using his aggressiveness on the ground and transitions while Archuleta took over in the third and fourth round with his powerful combinations, damage, and ability to dictate the pace of the fight.

Archuleta’s powerful body strikes looked to have taken a toll on Mix and took away his explosiveness in transitions when the fight got back to the ground. Mix landed a few head kicks and counter hooks, but it did not really slow Archuleta down or take a toll like the body shots did to him in the previous rounds. The bell sounded and then went to the judges’ scorecards.

The judges scored the fight 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47 in favour of Archuleta, giving him the unanimous decision victory and officially crowing him as the new champion in Bellator’s 135lb division.

Following the fight, Archuleta, at one time a four-division champion in KOTC, was ecstatic to finally capture gold in Bellator and dedicated this win to his teammates, heritage, and family:

“My teammates, they deserve this man. My country, Spain, where my ancestors come from…the fighting Spanish, the conquistadors, they deserve this.”

It will not take long for a new challenger to emerge in the bantamweight division as Bellator President Scott Coker mentioned that Sergio Pettis could be next in line for Archuleta’s first title defense.
