Bellator MMA begins a new year for their promotion on Saturday night, when Bellator 238 takes place live from one of the most iconic venues in sports---The Forum in Inglewood, California. All eyes will be on the main event as Bellator Women’s Featherweight Champion Julia “The Jewel” Budd looks to continue her dominance in Bellator when she defends her title against former UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Cris Cyborg. The bout has generated plenty of interest and Bellator is hoping this main event will help kickstart an exciting year for the promotion.

This is a tough test for Budd as Cyborg is one of the greatest women’s MMA fighters of all-time and a win over her would be significant for her legacy in the sport as well as potential opportunities that would follow should she defeat Cyborg.

The 36-year-old Canadian has been dominant in Bellator---undefeated 7-0 record in the promotion--- and is looking to prove that she can not only hold her own with an elite fighter, but that she should also be in the discussion of best pound-for-pound women’s fighters in MMA.

Budd has only been defeated twice in her MMA career; once to Ronda Rousey and once to Amanda Nunes however, that was early on in her career and she has continued to progress and improve as a mixed-martial-artist.

Last week, I had a chance to speak with Budd about her title defense and she brought up how she as motivated as ever and pushed hard to be Cyborg’s opponent in her Bellator debut. Although Cyborg’s last two fights were not the best performances of her career---knockout loss to Amanda Nunes and unanimous decision win over Felicia Spencer---she has prepared for and is expecting the very best version of Cyborg to show up.

Although Budd is focused on defeating Cyborg, she does have big plans after the fight. When I asked her about Bellator holding their first events in Hawaii and Japan and what it would take for the promotion to bring an event to Canada for the first time:

"I think me winning this fight will be a definite...I think they owe to me for that. Let's hope that they come to Canada; I have so much family in Toronto and you know it would be amazing to have it here in British Colombia, there's a lot of great Canadian athletes in Bellator and I feel like it would be amazing. So that being said, let's really hope that they come after this fight."

It will be very interesting to see how this fight plays out and if “The Jewel” can add a legend to the list of fighters she’s defeated.
