Toronto Marlies vs Binghamton Devils

It may have been a Wednesday night, but the Marlies and Devils played in what was the most exciting game this season.

Coming off a successful road trip, the Marlies were looking for a third straight win.  Toronto started off hot, getting a shot on goal into the chest of goalie Cam Johsnon 30 seconds into the game. Sam Gagner had the best chance of the game early treid to sneak one through the side of the net, but Johnson’s skate was there to keep it out.

The Marlies went on the power play six minutes in, and had Trevor Moore wired one from the slot but Johnson was there to make the save. Toronto had two shots on goal in the power play but weren’t able to score.

Sam Jardine and Brandon Baddock got into a fight at the end of the first much to everyone’s delight. Baddock ended up with a two minute penalty for instigating, five for fighting and a 10min major.  Jardine received five for fighting, while Frank Corrado went off for tripping.   

The first period ended with no goals.  Shots were 14-12 in favour of the Devils.


The second period started off four on four but neither team capitalized. Five minutes into the second and things started getting chippy again when Chirs Mueller and Michael McLeod got into it after a battle along the boards With that, the Marlies went on a power play with McLeod going off for tripping.  The Devild found themselves in deeper penalty trouble, with five second left in that penalty, the Devils were called again, this time Blake Speers for tripping. Toronto did a great job of keeping it in the Devils zone.  The Devils again went off for cross checking and the Marlies had another two man advantage. 

Then at 8:30 coming down the neutral zone, Dymtro Timashov fed Carl Grundstrom who wired one from the right circle past Johnson to put the Marlies up 1-0.  This was his 9th of the season. Timashov and LoVerde both had assists

The Devils got on the board with a power play goal when Blake Speers took a shot from the left circle and through the legs of McAdam to tie the game at 1. The time of the goal was 12:02, and was assisted by John Ramage and Kevin Rooney.

The game was tied heading into the intermission. Shots were 22-20 for the Devils.

The Marlies had a chance at another power play opportunity when Ryan Schmeizer went off for interference.  Toronto did a good job of pressuring and getting chances, and finally got on the board.  Trevor Moore banged one in from the left side of Johnson for his 16th of the season to make it 2-1 Marlies late in the third. Mueller and Bracco netted the assists on the goal.

Right after the goal, a brawl erupted in the Marlies zone with everyone including the goaltenders getting involved.  It took almost 20 minutes for pentalites to be figured out, but things got underway eventually.

While 400 penalties were being announced, Mason Marchment came though the neutral zone and ripped one in the slot passed Johnson to make it 3-1.  This was his 9th of the season, and was shorthanded goal. The goal was assisted by Trevor Moore.
