Toronto Maple Leafs vs Buffalo Sabres - Game Report - Feb 25th 2019

Frederik Andersen notched his 100th win for Toronto as the Maple Leafs beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 on a busy trade deadline day.

The Leafs got three quick goals from Auston Matthews, John Tavares and Frederik Gauthier in the second to take a lead, while Kasperi Kapanen added the insurance marker with a shorthanded goal in the third.  Mathews became the first player n Maple Leafs history to score 30-plus goals in his first three NHL seasons.

Jack Eichel scored two goals for the Sabres while Carter Hutton started in net stopping 9 of 12 shots in 25 minutes.  He was replaced by Linus Ullmark who turned aside 19 of 21 shots. 

The Sabres took a 1-0 lead in the first outshooting the Leafs 16-6 in the process

That all changed in the second.  

Tavares tied the game up after he redirected a slapshot from Jake Muzzin past Hutton at the 3:48 mark of the second.

Matthews made it 2-1 while Tavares goal was still being announced.  His own shot was deflected off Hutton and onto a Sabres defenseman and back to him. He swatted it into the net for the lead. 

Gauthier made it 3-1 just 28 seconds later taking a pass from Jake Gardiner and backhanding it past Hutton.  This was Gardiner’s 300 assist.

Buffalo answered with 2:35 left in the second period when Reinhart notched one on the man advantage off a tic-tac-toe play to make it 3-2.


The Sabres answered with a goal nine seconds into the third from Eichel cutting the lead to 4-3, but Kapanen was there to put the game away for good with 2:18 left in the game to make it 5-3 for the Leafs.
