Lightning 6 @ Leafs 2
The Tampa Bay Lightning proved they were too much for the Leafs to handle with a 6-2 win on Monday night.
Tyler Johnson and Cedric Paquette each scored two goals, Anthony Cirelli and Ondrej Palat also scored for Tampa Bay, and Ryan McDonagh, Yanni Gourde and Jan Rutta netted two assists on the night. Nikita Kucherov’s assist on the first goal gave him his NHL-best 111th point of the season.
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 26 saves in the win and improved to 12-1-2 over his last 15 starts.
Auston Matthews and Connor Brown scored for Toronto while Frederik Andersen allowed four goals on 19 shots before being pulled early in the second period. In came Garret Sparks who finished with 21 saves.
Tampa got out to a 1-0 lead 10:07 into the first when McDonagh's pass in front went off Johnson's skate and past Andersen.
They made it 2-0 with 1:22 left in the first when Cirelli's shot deflected from the slot and in past Andersen for his 14th goal of the year.
The Lightning added three more goals in the second and Braydon Coburn made it 4-0 when his shot ricocheted off Matthews.
Toronto finally got on the board at 11:49 when Matthews got His 31st goal off the rush to make it 5-1, but Tampa responded quickly with Paquette finishing off a 3-on-1 for a short-handed goal with 1:44 left.
