Tavares Has Last Laugh in Long Island

The Toronto Maple Leafs took down the New York Islanders 2-1 on Monday night in Long Island.

John Tavares recorded the game-winning goal at 3:50 of the third period and increased his season total to 46. With three games remaining, the 28-year-old has an outside chance of hitting the 50 milestone.

Jordan Eberle scores New York’s only goal of the game in a last gasp comeback effort. He made it a one-goal game at 14:55 of the third period before ultimately falling short.

Frederik Andersen stood tall with a 28-save performance to lead the Maple Leafs to victory.

It was another spirited return to Nassau Coliseum for Tavares, who was greeted by plenty of boos from the Islanders faithful. These persisted throughout the game’s entirety.

Calle Rosen recorded his first career NHL goal with a seeing-eye shot that fooled Robin Lehner and gave Toronto a 1-0 lead. The tally came at 2:07 and drew assists from Connor Brown and Nazem Kadri.

Auston Matthews had an injury scare after blocking a shot off the foot in the second period but would return to finish the game. He was slow to pick himself off the ice nonetheless.

Toronto is back in action tomorrow night at home versus Carolina. Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm.
