St. Louis (3) - Toronto (2) Final

Alex Pietrangelo scored a third period tie-breaking goal to propel the St. Louis Blues 3-2 over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

It was the 29-year-old's 400th NHL point since making his debut with the Blues in 2008-09. The captain also led the Blues with 24:33 time on ice.

For a second straight game, the Leafs failed to hold down a lead and allowed the opposition to steal two points.

The defending Stanley Cup champions came back from a 2-1 deficit to hand Toronto their first outright loss of the season. Oskar Sundqvist opened the scoring in the second period at Scotiabank Arena with a slap shot to cleanly beat Frederik Andersen.

Jordan Binnington earned his second victory of the season and earned a secondary assist on Sundqvist’s tally. He improves his record to 2-0-1 with a .928 save percentage to begin the 2019-20 campaign.

Toronto stormed back later in the second with back-to-back goals by Frederik Gauthier and William Nylander respectively in a span of 0:24 seconds. The home team maintained that lead until the second half of the final frame when defensive breakdowns caught up to them.

Andersen turned away 27-of-30 shots en route to his first loss of the season. His next start is expected to come Thursday against an always lethal Tampa Bay Lightning squad in the Maple Leafs’ next game.

The Leafs were provided two power-play opportunities but failed to convert on either of them.
