The Raptors 905 season opener took place Friday night at the Paramount Fine Foods Center, where they fell short to the Grand Rapids Drive, 94-109.

Though they started the game keeping a steady pace, even leading by 6 points, it didn’t last long as the Grand Rapids Drive swiftly took a comfortable lead. The Raptors 905 struggled in shooting and on the defensive end, especially in the 3rd quarter which seemed to be the pivotal moment in the game.

The Grand Rapids Drive managed to create a 10 point lead at half time. That was when things took a bad turn for the Raptors 905 and they struggled to catch up since then. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Grand Rapids Drive increased their lead to 15 points and lead by as much as 20 points at one point.

The Mississauga team had a chance to cut the lead down to single digits but were unable to do so in the 4th quarter. The Grand Rapids Drive were just much stronger both offensively and defensively compared to the Raptors 905. No matter what approach they took, they just weren't able to find an answer to stopping the offense of the Detroit team.

There is still a lot of work to be done for this Mississauga team, and they have the rest of the season to improve with the new members that were added this season. It was a tough loss, but with this loss comes a great learning opportunity for the Raptors 905.

A player who showed a lot of promise during this game was the 2019 Draft pick, Dewan Hernandez, who had 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. Using his shooting ability with his intensity on the court and combining it with the strengths of his teammates, the Raptors 905 can create a strong team that can go far in the playoffs. All things considered, there is a lot of room for growth for the Raptors 905, and they have all the key pieces to do it.

The Raptors 905 will face Westchester Knicks on Saturday, November 9th, at the Westchester County Center, hoping to bounce back from their season opener loss. Their next home game is on Wednesday, November 20th against the Maine Red Claws at the Paramount Fine Foods Center.
