G1 Climax 28 Weekend Update
Sunday, August 5, 2018
And there was none……
The last remaining wrestler in the G1 Climax that was unbeaten going into this weekend has lost. Kenny Omega lost a bruising affair against Tomohiro Ishii. Omega hit Ishii with one V-Trigger after another, but it wasn’t enough to keep Ishii down and after surviving this onslaught, Ishii managed to blow B Block wide open with the upset victory.
Kota Ibushi beat Tetsuya Naito and has now put himself in a great position to win Block B if he can beat his tag team partner, Omega on the very last night. Naito needs a lot of help now to win the Block.
One of my favourite matches of the weekend was SANADA vs Toru Yano. Yano has been at his comedic best all tournament, as he tries to stay within the rules and ultimately fails. SANADA got the best of him here by tying him to a guardrail and then attaching that to the ring-post. Rocky Romero left Kevin Kelly alone in the commentary area to try to help but was thwarted by SANADA as well, leading to some comic dialogue between Kelly and Romero, whilst the latter was in the paradise lock.
Although I have enjoyed the commentary between Kelly and Romero, the constant mention of the phantom C Block has grown old and they just need to drop that as part of their dialogue.
Juice Robinson lost to Zach Sabre Jr and Sabre seemed to make his intent well known at the end of the match as he picked up Juice’s IWGP United States Title and laid it at his feet. A match between the two with the title on the line is very much a part of these wrestler’s future it would seem, but hopefully with both men completely healthy.
Block A is also very wide open with just one night left and can be won by three men, Kazuchika Okada, Jay White and Hiroshi Tanahashi. Tanahashi faces Okada on the last night and has a two-point advantage over his opponent and White but White owns the tiebreaker over both of his adversaries. White must win on the last night and root for Okada to win.
Tanahashi 14 pts
White 12 pts
Okada 12 pts
Omega 12 pts
Ibushi 10 pts
Naito 10 pts
G1 Climax resumes on Wednesday as we are now hitting the stretch run to determine the winner of the tournament and we will find out who wins the opportunity to challenge the IWGP Heavyweight Champion in the future.
