AHL Quick Fire
Calder Cup Final Preview
It is finally here, the Calder Cup final series begins this Saturday, June 2nd. The Eastern Conference will be represented by the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ affiliate, and the Western Conference will be represented by the Texas Stars, the Stars’ affiliate team.
It’s two different teams, the Marlies are a bunch of young talented players who hope to begin their quest for a regular spot in the NHL with a Calder Cup win. The oldest player of the team is Colin Greening, at 32 years old. Head coach Sheldon Keefe would make a great impression on the hockey world with a win in the finals. The Marlies are largely favourite in this matchup, especially being the regular season champions.
On the other hand, the Stars have a far more experienced roster, but far less talented. Although they aren’t as talented as their opponents, the Stars make up for it with hard-work and cohesion on all aspects of the game. Being from Montreal, this Texas team is much alike the Montreal Canadiens from 1993, winning almost every time the game goes to overtime. They played 37 times this season in extra time, including 4 times in the Western final, where they won 3 games.
It will be a good series where a talented team will face a hard working squad who was at this stage just 4 years ago. It is difficult to make a prediction, but I would put my money on Toronto, they are just so talented and they play at such a high level, they could beat some NHL teams. They also played far less games than their opponent.
So I will say this: Toronto in 6, with Texas winning 1 or 2 games in overtime.
