What a great weekend of sports!!
Let's start with the NCAA Final Four as the cinderella run of Sister Jean and Loyola Chicago came to an end. The Wolverines were down double digits in the first half closed the game on a 38-16 run and rallied to advance to the Finals. Michigan who won the Big 10 tournament is on an amazing run. They haven't lost since early February and got an incredible bracket. The Wolverines never had to beat a top 5 seed due to the amount of upsets in their region. They now face the best team in the tournament in Villanova. The Wildcats steam rolled Kansas hitting a new final 4 record amount of three pointers. The Wildcats look like the best team in basketball and are a 7 point favourite against a red hot Michigan team.
Should also be noted that Notre Dame won the women's NCAA tournament doing it in dramatic fashion. They got a buzzer beater in the semi finals and then hit a buzzer beating 3 to win the Championship. Congrats to the Irish!!
It looks like the Maple Leafs will play Tampa Bay in the first round as the Lightning have been awful down the stretch while the Bruins have been scorching hot. The big question for the Lightning will be is Steven Stamkos going to be healthy for the playoffs? He left the game vs Nashville with a leg injury. Stamkos has had 2 other leg injuries in his NHL career and if he is not 100% that could spell doom for a Tampa team playing a very deep Toronto team in the 1st round.
The West features a great race for the final Wild Card spot between Colorado, St.Louis, Los Angeles and Anaheim. One of these 4 teams will miss the playoffs. The Avs suffered some key injuries as well as Varlamov and Johnson will both be out for the stretch drive. With Jonathan Bernier in net Sunday the Avs blew a 3-1 3rd period lead and lost to Anaheim 4-3. The Avs did get a point but the Blues catch a huge break Monday facing a Capitals team that clinched the Metro on Sunday vs Pittsburgh and has nothing to play for. A win by St.Louis puts the Blue back in the playoffs. This playoff spot might come down to game 82 when the Avalanche host the Blues. Should be a fun final week of the regular season.
Stay tuned next week I will have my 1st round playoff predictions as the post-season begins next week. Enjoy the action!!
