AHL Quick Fire

AHL/CCM Player of the Week

San Jose Barracuda captain, John McCarthy has been voted the AHL/CCM Player of the week. The forward, part of USA’s Olympic team, scored 3 goals and 3 assists in 2 games this past week. He helped the Barracuda to stay in the thick of the playoff race with his team’s winning its fourth consecutive game.

The Boston native, a 7th round pick by the San Jose Sharks, has now 260 points in 483 AHL appearances.

A goal by a…. goaltender?!

Yes, you read that correctly. Charlotte Checkers goaltender, Alex Nedeljkovic scored a goal this past week! He became only the 13th goalie to do so in the leagues 82 years of existence and only the 8th to actually shoot the puck in the net. In a game against the Hartford Wolfpack, Nedeljkovic cleared his own zone and scored in the empty net. A great feat for any goaltender!

Head coach signs extension.

Scott Gordon, head coach for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms has signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia Flyers organization. Although the details haven’t been made public, we can assume that it must be a good deal for coach Gordon. He brought the Flyers’ affiliate team back to respectability, especially last year, when the team reached the playoff for the first time since 2009. They are currently sitting atop the Atlantic division.
