AHL Quick Fire

AHL/CCM Player of the Week

Belleville Senators forward Ben Sexton has been named the CCM/AHL Player of the week! Sexton, an Ottawa native, has collected 7 points in his last 3 games. Over that span he scored 3 goals and assisted on 4 more.

Although Belleville played 3 games, Sexton was held scoreless in one of them, basically scoring his 7 points in 2 games, including a hat-trick against Utica. He participated on 7 of his team’s 8 goals during the week.

Life after the Olympics

For the first time in 20 years, no NHL players were competing for gold at the latest Winter Olympics. Although the tournament did not gather as much attention as it used to, NHL scouts were very attentive. Some players used this opportunity for a second chance in the NHL. 3 notable players were signed to professional contracts after PyeongChang:

-          Brian Gionta, USA. Gionta signed with the Boston bruins for the remainder of the season.

-          Chris Kelly, Canada. The veteran was signed by the Anaheim Ducks to solidify their center line for a playoff push.

-          Cody Goloubef, Canada. The Stockton Heat defenceman signed a 2-way contract for the rest of the season. Calgary needs depth on defense and they chose to pick in their own court.
